Days 159-161: Dining out in Leominster

I'm almost half way through this journey and I may be experiencing "writer's block."  "Cooker's block?"  "Recipe block?"  Anyway, part of me blames the changing of the season.  New seasons generally bring a lot of ambition for me--new season, new produce, new tastes, new recipes.  But with summer, even though a lot of that feeling is there still, there is also a feeling of "I don't want to turn the oven on" or "I just want to stay outside as long as possible."  We don't own a grill, so I "grill" inside.  And sometimes with summer, I'm so anxious for it to come that I start making summer recipes early (during spring) in anticipation of summer.  So then by the time summer is really here, I'm sick of 'em already.  Alas, what's a girl to do?

Go out!  :)

Yeah, we did a little of that this weekend.  I did have a small catering gig on Sunday, but I wasn't able to take pictures because my morning was a little rushed.  I had to bring the food to the church, and I had a meeting after church, so we were planning on going to the second service (starting at 10:30).  At about 8:30, it suddenly dawned on me that I was supposed to work in the nursery at the 9:00 service!!!  My darling husband went in my place, so I lost the helping hand I thought I would have.  Everything still got done, however, and my children and I made it to church on time for the 10:30 service--each looking darling in our own church clothes. ;)  In case you're wondering, the catering menu featured buttermilk baked chickenpotato salad, garden salad, homemade bread, and fruit crumble with ice cream for dessert.

I wanted to quickly give a "shout-out" to a neat little restaurant in downtown Leominster that Randy took me to Saturday night, Rye & Thyme.  It's a very nice restaurant with an entire menu dedicated to locally brewed beer.  Of course they have a nice selection of bourbon and rye.  The menu includes classic American eats and features a raw bar--Randy and I split an order of 6 oysters. :)  It's a great little place with outdoor seating which you should totally check out the next time you're in the area!
Beer/shot combos--allagash white and allagash black.  The whiskey WAS in the shot glasses.
So, that pretty much covers days 159-161.  Friday we had leftovers and the rest of the weekend we dined out.  But this week I've got some new recipes planned, and hopefully can find the time to publish them--will be hitting the beach pretty hard this week!  :)  Here's to hoping I find some culinary inspiration along the way!  Have a great week!

Days 94-98 (Wed-Sun): Sonoma Valley Vacation & Recovery

There are no new recipes in this post since I haven't cooked anything for the past 5 days!  But, I got some ideas and learned a lot about wine!  (To read more about this trip, see my page on What Inspires Me.)
The first thing I tried that I knew I had to write about was the pizza.  Traditional West Coast pizza is very different from our style of pizza.  Sure, you can order a plain cheese, pepperoni, or many other similar types of pies, but they won't taste as good, I imagine.  We did have a more "traditional" East Coast pizza one night, and it was sub-standard.  The dough was flat and not flavorful at all, the cheese was barely melted, and the marinara sauce tasted pretty awful.  So, my theory is, if you're on the West Coast and you want pizza, eat a traditional West Coast pizza!  This pizza had loads of toppings, that actually worked with the more "flatbread" style crust.  It was loaded with a ranch dressing-type sauce, pepperoni, bacon, chicken, mushroom, tomatoes, basil, red onions, mozzarella cheese, and I believe Jack cheese, and drizzled with barbeque sauce.  It was delicious!!!
This was Wednesday, Day 94, and a recipe I will be re-creating in my own kitchen sometime soon!  (We arrived in Sonoma Wednesday evening.  Most wineries and fine dining places there close between 5-6 pm.  We opted for a more casual dining experience, The Round Table, open until 11.  We had wine in our room that night!)

The Merlot was Randy's favorite selection from Chateau St. Jean.
Day 95 was filled with wine-tasting, driving, site-seeing and simply enjoying being husband and wife.  We had a very relaxing trip, and though I wrestled with the "ethics" of it--missing my children, wondering if I was being selfish, etc, I know how worth it it really was!  You need that time to just be husband and wife.  And sometimes the occasional "date night" isn't enough.  It's no secret that Randy and I have very busy lives at the moment.  How fortunate we are to have family close willing and able to help out in various ways.  More specifically, to have my parents live close enough to see our kids regularly and be willing to "keep" them for 4 days and 3 nights while we were on the other side of the country.
Rest is not only necessary, it's Biblical.  And it comes in many forms.  It's very hard for parents ("working" AND non) to come by rest.  I have such an energetic personality, have traveled a lot, and have many places I still want to see and things I want to do.  So it was difficult for me to keep this trip casual and restful.  While planning it, I had to work hard not to over-plan.  And while experiencing, yes, we gave up doing a few things that I would've liked to do because they may have been too much trouble to be worth it.  This trip was about rest.  Rest that comes from knowing your children are well taken care of (even though Abby refused to talk to me the 2 times I called her--she's 2.  Whatever.)  Rest that comes from knowing you are with your best friend in the whole world, you have forgotten all responsibilities, and can just do what you please when you please.  Even rest that comes from knowing that when the vacation is over, you are still with your best friend, have beautiful, well-behaved children, and almost everyday can feel like a vacation if you look at it the right way.  That is what we got--rest.  And it was wonderful.
Part of Chateau St. Jean
In a way, I was able to relate the idea of rest to a fine wine.  We learned a lot about wine while in Wine Country.  Our first stop was the Chateau St. Jean.  I know I've bought their wine here, before.  And it's good.  We had a nice tasting in their estate room and explored the grounds a little bit.
Our next stop was the Benziger Family Winery.  Here's where we learned the most.  We had a guided tour of their vineyards and farm and learned about the different types of grapes, what they need as far as sun, temperature, rain, etc, and how they are fermented (i.e. rested).  It is essential for the grape "juice" to just sit in barrels and just rest.  Anywhere from 3 months to 2 years before heading to bottle.  (By they way, these huge barrels we saw hundreds of--produce about 288 bottles each!  And selling for no less than $20 a bottle at a winery, that's a pretty hefty pay-day!  We also tried a taste of a $100 bottle of wine.  Yeah, it was that good.)  Without the resting period, the wine does not have that amazing effect (no, not drunkenness)--the one where it tickles your taste buds with only a whiff.  A wine-bound
grape needs rest in order to ferment and become what it's meant to become.  Just like we need rest in
order to be our best in the day-to-day.  Yeah, this may be cheesy, but c'mon, you know it's true!
After the Benziger Family Winery (where we also picnicked with wine and sandwiches and snacks from Whole Foods), we were given free vauchers to taste at their "sister" winery, the Imagery Family Estate.  How can you pass up free wine-tasting???  These wines can only be bought there, at the winery.  They were very good, also.  Our dinner that night was at Saddles Steakhouse, and it was excellent.  And that would be Day 95.

Day 96 consisted of a bit more tasting (Schug Winery and Robledo Family Winery) and then it was back to San Francisco.  The plan was to do a lot of site-seeing, but we only did some.  It was raining and cold and rather miserable.  Here's where that tough decision to not site-see came into play.  Randy is not a city-boy.  I feel like a city-girl at heart.  This trip was his gift, though, and I was fine just relaxing as much as he didn't want to be in the city one more minute, dripping wet.  We headed straight for our "airport" hotel and what?  That's right, rested.  Sure, we got to see the Golden Gate Bridge, but what we didn't do is all the more reason to go back, right? :)  By the way, our dinner that night, was not good.  Yep, this was the pizza I was talking about earlier.  Oh well.  It happens.

Saturday we headed home.  Day 97 was filled with airport food, good stuff at the Atlanta airport!  Day 98, today, was recovery.  Grocery shopping before church, pastries for breakfast, mac & cheese for lunch, and Chinese food for Randy & my dinner.  Let the vacation continue, just one more night!  Tomorrow it's back to the grind, but we will be sure to remember to keep resting when we need it!  And yes, I can't wait to make dinners worthy enough to be paired with some of the wine we took home, and I'll be re-creating that pizza sooner rather than later, I think!  :)

Day 75: Outback Steakhouse & A New Experiment

Tonight's dinner cycled through a few plans before the plan that actually stuck.  The first plan was Hawaiian pizza.  But then the week flew by before I had a chance to make my pizza dough so that was a no-go.  It's on deck for tomorrow night, though!  The next plan was a chicken dish with a pasta salad, which was originally supposed to be Monday night's supper but Sunday night's supper got pushed to Monday and Monday's plan disappeared until tonight (sort of).  But when I got home with the kids, I was so tired, and then I got into my blog and new thumbtack website that it was 5:00 before I knew it and nothing had been done dinner-wise.  So my next plan was to have leftover lasagna from last night.  Leftovers are a huge money-saver and Randy always used to say, "You know, we can and SHOULD have leftovers more often.  I like leftovers!"  And I would always insist that he deserved a fresh-cooked meal every night. (If only!)  I've never been a huge fan of leftovers, but I understand their place.  Anyway, I was quite proud of myself as I phoned Randy and informed him that we would have leftovers tonight and I wasn't ashamed.  Until his response, "Umm, ok.  That's fine.  I'll probably have something else, though, since I had leftover lasagna for lunch today."  Drat.  The one time I'm proud to announce "leftovers" and he's leftovered-out.

OK, time to figure something out.  A-ha!  I have a couple giftcards to Outback Steakhouse.  Let's feed the kids the leftover lasagna (which they really loved last night) and we'll get Outback to-go!  Done!  That's what we did.  It was so good for our souls, too.  Usually, when my husband and I get take-out, we sit in front of the TV and catch up on our Netflix shows.  But tonight, we had a lot of talking to do.  It's been a crazy week and we haven't seen much of each other.  We ate our take-out in the dining room and talked about things that are on our hearts and minds.  Randy made killer margaritas, too!  The recipe will follow, and I apologize for there being no photograph.  I was a little too "in the moment" to remember to take a picture.  It was a fantastic dinner!

I wanted to share a new "experiment" that I'll be conducting food-related this month.  Randy and I are in the process of making some "future" decisions and changes.  Because of this, I've become a lot more budget-conscience and cringe at the amount of money we spend on food and drinks each month.  I've seen evidence of a whole Market Basket vs. OTHER grocery bill debate on facebook and elsewhere.  We live close to a Market Basket, and closer to a Hannaford.  The Hannaford is a more "comfortable" shopping experience for me and I've never been outraged at their prices.  I did shop at Market Basket for my last catering gig, but I don't really know if it saved me any money.  I remember noticing certain prices, and then recalling that they were no different from prices at Hannaford.  So, I sort of want to settle this on my own.  I've decided for the next month to shop exclusively at Market Basket and see if I really notice a difference in our end-of-the-month grocery total.  One week of experimentation just won't suffice since there can sometimes be a $20 difference in my weekly groceries at the same store depending on my menu.  I've decided that a whole month should give me a good idea of the price difference (if any).  And hopefully, this might settle some questions others have been debating about this and other stores, also.  I haven't quite decided exactly how much I'm willing to share detail-wise about the money I spend, but I hope to figure that out soon.  My first grocery shopping endeavor of April is tomorrow!  Market Basket, here I come! (I guess I should get started on my menu/grocery list!)

Tequila Canyon Margarita
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/4 oz triple sec
4 oz cranberry juice
1/2 oz orange juice
1/2 oz pineapple juice
lime slice for garnish
ice

Pour tequila, liqueur, and cranberry juice into ice-filled glass.  Top with orange and pineapple juices.  Stir.  Garnish with lime and serve with a straw.

Day 44: Domino's Carry-Out

Well, we're all pretty much feeling better today, but for me, not well enough to cook anything.  I recognize this feeling all too well.  When I was pregnant with Abigail, I was sick (nauseous and vomiting) from about 8-23 weeks.  Since then, the feeling of wanting-to-eat-something-but-not-quite-knowing-what-and-definitely-not-willing-to-cook-it just brings back horrible memories.  That's how I felt tonight.  I settled on pizza.  It was nice to order out on a weeknight, kind of made it feel like the weekend!  But back to reality tomorrow for us all!  Speaking of which, I just found out that Randy will be working late and then heading straight to his evening job tomorrow, so we'll see what tomorrow night's dinner brings.  Just as an FYI, this is what this week's menu was SUPPOSED to look like:

MONDAY: pita pocket salads
TUESDAY: turkey pot pie
WEDNESDAY: eggplant parmesan
THURSDAY: Italian marinated chicken w/ mashed potatoes, & broccoli au gratin
FRIDAY: steak wellzones

I'm not thinking I'll move the eggplant parmesan to Thursday, and keep Friday's menu.  Tomorrow night will be something special for Abby and me.

I did make Randy lunch, today, though.  I happened to have some cooked chicken in the fridge, and my ceasar dressing made up.  So I made him chicken ceasar pockets.  For my chicken ceasar sandwich recipe, see Day 5.
